The Raven Queen is the ancient goddess of death. She is so old and mysterious that her true name has long been lost. It is unknown if she is the same entity as the Faerûnian god, Shar, or an opposing entity attempting to usurp Shar's throne. She marks the end of each mortal life, and mourners call upon her during funeral rites, in the hope that she will guard the departed from the curse of undeath.
Because of her hatred of undeath, she and the demon lord Orcus are fierce enemies.
Description
Appearance
The Raven Queen is described as a tall and slender woman, with flowing black hair and pale, porcelain skin. She almost always wears a blank, porcelain mask. On the rare occasions she removes it, she is described as a beautiful woman with red irises.
Commandments
She expects her followers to abide by these commandments:
- Hold no pity for those who suffer and die, for death is the natural end of life.
- Bring down the proud who try to cast off the chains of fate. As the instrument of the Raven Queen, you must punish hubris where you find it.
- Watch for the cults of Orcus and stamp them out whenever they arise. The Demon Prince of the Undead seeks to claim the Raven Queen's throne.
Mystery
Since it's unknown if she actually is Shar or is simply a usurper, much of her history is shrouded in mystery. Her followers often ignore Shar's existence and worship The Raven Queen instead.
